This blog has been an idea floating around in my head for a while now. Basically, I want to share some of the things I do to allow us to live on 1 income in a 2 income world.
I haven't always been or had to be frugal. My other half was laid off 2 years ago without warning and went to work in the family welding business. Since he's basically self-employed and his job is dependent on the weather, it isn't very stable. I teach, so my job was stable. We decided that since we were planning on having kids soon, he would stay home and I would work. Living on one paycheck wasn't difficult, it just required some changes and some creative budgeting. Most of my inspirations for making new things have come from the internet. Some I've gotten from old cookbooks and homemaking books I inherited from my grandmother.
A little about our set-up and life.
Right now it's just J, me, our beagle, Honey, our 2 outside cats, Samus and Boots and 6 chickens (well, technically 4 roosters and 2 hens and the unbalance in a long story). We live on 5 wooded acres outside of Austin. It is very rural out here, to say the least. You literally drive till the pavement ends and we're the next house on the road. I'm a Special Education Teacher and I work in a work experience/life skills classroom. J is a welder and works in the family business. He doesn't have to work everyday and that's the way he likes it. We have a 3 bedroom 2.5 bath house. We are pretty much debt free, except for my college loans, but I'll probably be paying on those until I retire :( Being debt free has really helped us live on a single income. We didn't follow any certain plan in particular other than paying as much off every month as we could.
